Kim Sung Chang

Contemporary Abstract Painting

Kim Sung Chang is a Korean contemporary abstract painter whose practice centers on the purity, infinity, and immaterial qualities of blue. Drawing from memories of the Pacific sky, sea, and deep ocean, he transforms personal experience into layered fields of color and texture.

Using steel scrapers and repeated, rhythmic gestures, Kim builds dense surfaces in which oil and acrylic paint overlap, break apart, and merge. His earlier works emphasized intense and vivid blues, while his recent paintings have expanded toward softer pastel tones, allowing memory and emotion to emerge more openly within the composition.

Rather than depicting a specific landscape, Kim reconstructs the sensations associated with nature. The stillness and subtle tension within his paintings reflect the connection between the natural world and human existence, while their tactile surfaces convey nostalgia, contemplation, and purified emotion.

Kim studied Western painting at Kyonggi University and its Graduate School of Arts. He has presented five solo exhibitions and participated in approximately thirty group exhibitions and art fairs in Korea and internationally.
